JUST IN: Protest Shuts Down Enugu Psychiatric Hospital as Demand to Reopen Nursing School Grows Stronger

The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNH) in Enugu came to a standstill as a coalition of civil society organizations staged a protest against the prolonged closure of the Hospital's School of Mental Nursing. Demonstrators, wielding placards, granted a 72-hour ultimatum to Prof. Monday Igwe Nwite, the Medical Director, to reopen the school.

The sole mental nursing school in South East Nigeria has been reportedly shut down by Prof. Igwe for nearly three months, leaving students disheartened. Over 200 protestors, led by Comrade Onyebuchi Igboke, called on Prof. Pate Ali, the Minister of Health, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and other relevant agencies to urgently address the situation.

Placards displayed by the protesters bore messages such as 'Monday Igwe, we are tired of you,' 'Monday Igwe, face corruption charges,' and 'Open our school for final exams.' The coalition expressed their frustration over the closure, asserting that the Medical Director's actions were jeopardizing students' futures.

Comrade Igboke, addressing the press, emphasized that the hospital was not the CMD's personal enterprise and urged the Minister of Health to intervene. He stated, "We are here today to call on the new Minister of Health to investigate Prof. Igwe." The protestors insisted that Prof. Igwe must step down to pave the way for stability within the government-owned institution.

Protestors also accused Prof. Igwe of unfairly targeting staff, particularly those from different regions. Igboke called for an investigation into alleged corrupt practices by the Medical Director. "What we are saying is that Monday Igwe should step aside, so that the federal government can investigate all the corruption and abuse of office petitions against him."

In response, Prof. Igwe claimed ignorance of any protest against him. "I am not aware of any protest or demonstration at the hospital. Maybe it was an arrangement or something," he stated. Regarding the School of Nursing's closure, he clarified that the school wasn't closed, but rather the accreditation was withdrawn by the Medical Council. He affirmed that efforts were being made to reinstate the accreditation, distinguishing between withdrawal of accreditation and school closure.
